Concept

As a post-Hurricane Harvey re-build, this home was designed around two massive oaks for a family of four. The challenges of building in a flood plain so near the bayou introduced unique design opportunities, resulting in primary and secondary floors with a mid-level incorporated over the carport. The new home pays tribute to the lot’s previous mid-century modern home featuring warm earthy tones, and salvaged furniture and material from the original home.

With flooding in mind, the lower portions of the home are constructed using Concrete Masonry Units (CMU). Additional notable materials include ipe, Thermory ash decking and walnut millwork. An orange front door first captures guests’ attention, followed by a relaxed ambience that graciously welcomes them inside. The home includes a woodshop, and a meditation space for yoga with views of a stunning oak in the back. Tiered levels of covered deck connect the main house and meditation space while serving as a central hub between the backyard and side-yard spaces.

Our Clients

“We hired Albany Studio to rebuild on our lot after flooding during Hurricane Harvey. After speaking with several design/build firms, we felt strongly that Chase and Su were the ones we wanted to work with. They were kind, flexible, asked us questions about what we wanted, and were willing to salvage as much as possible from our flooded house and so easy to work with. Over the next 18 months, from design to financing to construction they remained as we expected. Chase handled the actual construction, which took about 13 months. We have built before and we can attest that the quality of the work was excellent. All of the tradespeople we spoke with told us, unsolicited, how much they enjoy working for Chase and on Albany Studio projects. The final house is beautiful and just what we wanted. There are some really innovative aspects of the house and it really brings the outside in, which is what we wanted. We were able to preserve and highlight two huge oak trees on our lot and we love looking at them from many different views and angles. Given what a stressful time it was to build post-Harvey, I can't say enough about Chase and his team - their kindness, skill and talent. We love our home!”
